Iowa State University visit on March 12thGoing on a college visit normally consists of a college tour and if you are lucky a meal at the dinning hall is included too. Our visit to ISU had a lot more to offer with our special visit to the biotechnology lab. Students who attended, were able to go into a college genetics lab and practice some of the techniques needed in a university science class.
And while most college tours provide lunch, students were treated to exceptional treatment at the special guest only dinning area. Eating their fill of food and ice cream. If you are interested in ISU or even just getting a taste of a college science lab, keep your eye out fore the next trip out to ISU. |
Northwest Iowa Community College visit on March 11thYou missed a real treat on the 11th of March if you did not attend the Northwest Iowa Community College trip. This community college in Sheldon has been putting forth a lot of effort to make their programs competitive to area students and it really showed. From The production welding department that is shown in the picture on the left, to the the newly renovated Snap-on Automotive classrooms this school provides a top of the line education to those interested in the Trades.
We were lucky to have the head of the Dean of Applied Technology & Workforce, Steve Waldstein provide our tour. He has been instrumental in growing these programs and making the industry connections that are needed to make industrial technology programs thrive. If you have not already, consider looking into NCC in Sheldon. There are lots of great educational opportunities here that you can choose from. |
University of Northern Iowa Young Women in Leadership Conference trip on March 4th
Although it was an early morning wake up for the young women who choose to attend this business focused day, the learning opportunities of the day-long business conference was well worth it. There were a number of different speakers that students had the opportunity to learn from. All shared about their experience working in the world of business, as well as pushing outside the boundaries that are sometimes put on women to own a company, create a new foundation and to speak out for their causes to name a few. Students who attended received lunch and tour of campus and were able to interact with a number of other students from eastern Iowa who like them had an interest in working in or starting a new business. There were even a couple of students who already had businesses of their own! This trip occurs annually at UNI's main campus, so consider attending next year if you are going to be an upcoming senior or junior. We would love to have a greater presence at next year's conference.
FAUST Beauty School visit on March 3rd

BVU College Visit Day on February 26th
We at East Sac have been on the BVU campus for a number of different events, from band concerts to agriculture experience days, however what we have not been able to do as much is a classic college tour. Students who attended the BVU college visit day, got to experience just that, a full tour of campus, a meeting with an admissions counselor and a discussion with a university professor and a couple of students about different educational options available. This trip was only a half day, but provided an opportunity for those in the younger grades (freshman and sophomores) to see a college campus prior to their junior year. In the very least, all students who attended were able to add another school to compare when thinking about postsecondary education options that they want to pursue.
Iowa Central Healthcare Day on February 18thIowa Central has a number of trips for career discovery throughout the year. One of the bigger trips is for those interested in healthcare. Because of the wide interest for the trip in the Fall, they added a trip for the spring time as well. This trip had all the same guests come to the main campus instead of having to take buses to the hospital. For example, during the fall trip, we were able to see the various SIM labs, and in the spring we also were able to learn about the robotic technology used to help those in the nursing program gain experience in an emergency department.
For the students who attended, there were a number of experts that were able to shed light on a number of the different healthcare programs they offer at Iowa Central including radiology, CNA, and so much more. |
Culinary Day on January 30thHave you ever thought that a career outside the traditional office was a career for you? Well if so, you would have benefitted from attending the Culinary trip on January 30th. Student's tried their hand making roses out of not only napkins but also out of fondant and chopping all sorts of things. This trip had both active learning elements as well as speakers that shared about their experiences in a variety of roles in the restaurant industry. If you think work in the hospitality or service industry may be for you, I highly recommend that you consider attending the next Culinary trip. I am sure that it will not disapoint. |

Van Wall with DMACC on November 14thHosted by DMACC's Carroll campus, on November 14th students interested in learning about John Deere, as well as their scholarship and training program ventured off campus to one of our area's Van Wall Equipment locations.

October 30th was Fall Manufacturing Trip
It is that time of the year again, time for another big trip to Iowa manufacturers. This semester for the fall trip, we visited two area businesses, VT Industries in Holstein and Meridian Manufacturing in Storm Lake.
Both locations featured robotics and showed students how their respective companies had continued to grow. VT Industries location manufactured commercial wood doors while Meridian constructs seed tenders, augers and grain bins. If you are interested in attending one of these trips, all you have to do is participate in School-to-Careers or Industrial Technology classes here at the high school and you will be eligible to attend. If you attended in the Fall, there will be a whole new experience in the Spring, so sign up for another class with Mrs. Kock or Mr. McCollough. |
BVU Agriculture Day on October 23rdDo you know how to tie a calf in order to give it a shot? DO you know how to determine if you have a good batch of soy beans seeds? If you attended the Buena Vista University second annual Agricultural Day on the 23rd of October you would know these techniques and more. There were 4 different hands on learning sessions including one that had students practice identifying soil types and another that had students learn about farm insurance.
Although it was a windy and wet day, students did not let the weather discourage them as they not only participated in the normally scheduled programing but also got a miniature tour of campus. Students got a number of freebies from the businesses who presented on the day, including but not limited to sunglasses and chapsticks and had the opportunity to eat at the campus cafeteria and practice on a virtual drone simulator. |

April 26th was STEM Day
How did you like STEM day 2019??
All high school students were able to come and participate in this unique experience to talk to regional employers who deal with STEM. For all those who do not know, STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The employers present worked in a variety of different industries and completed a variety of different tasks, from calculating loans for cars to fish in lakes; these employers had varied activities for students to complete. We hope that you who attended enjoyed your time. If you would like to share any insights about how your experience was, or if there are improvements you think we should do, please reach out! This event and others are for you, so feel free to share your opinions. Consider sharing your thoughts on the Q&A page or even coming in to speak with either Ms. Davis or Mrs. Hoefling. |
April 17th we visited wind turbines
Ever wonder what is really going on inside one of those giant turbines that you see off the highways? Ever think of actually going inside one of them, well if you were one of the few that signed up for the wind power trip on April 17th, you got to find out.
We had all our questions answered by three experts in wind energy at Mid American Energy, one of the leading energy providers of green energy in the area. The talked about the how turbines have continued to be updated and augmented over the course of years to produce the most energy as possible. The wind farm that we went to, Intrepid, was actually the first Wind farm the Mid-American built and has over 100 turbines. Even one made of reinforced concrete, which is quite unheard of. If you are thinking of working in green jobs, this trip would tickle your fancy. |
April 2nd was Iowa Central Agriculture Day
This year, Iowa Central changed their goals about career exploration events at the campus. Instead of doing general career fairs with students learning about a variety of different jobs and fields, they have adjusted their events to be more focused.
They have had 2 this year that East Sac high school students have attended (Criminology day and now Agriculture day) at Agriculture day, students had the opportunity to learn about not only careers in agriculture but also got to have hands on learning experiences. Such was the case with this sprayer simulator. Everyone who drives these in real life should get a pay raise, because as students learned, this is a hard piece of machinery to navigate. Also we had the opportunity to hear and ask questions to Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture. To learn more about the day's events, check out the article from The Messager by clicking here. |
March 28th Animal Science tripEast Sac County high school students had the unique opportunity to learn about jobs involving animal science by visiting and touring two places in Ames centered on animal health.
First, the group went to the UDSA department of Animal diseases. We got a presentation from the director of the department Dr. Marcus Kehrli. After his presentation, we got to tour the building and learn about the safety measures that they have enacted to make sure that those working with diseases remain safe. Next we went to the Iowa State veterinary school, the first public college of veterinary medicine in the United States. We ate lunch there at the school, and then got a tour. The place is huge! they treat all sorts of animals there, and they have the facilities to do it all. At the end we even got to take this picture next to the gentle doctor, the symbol of university's program. If you are interested in attending, but could not this year we will likely have another animal science trip in the fall of next year so keep your eyes peeled for news of the early next year. |
March 12th Spring Manufacturing trip
Just another reason to be in industrial tech or School-to-careers this year. Those in these two classes were able to spend a Tuesday learning about some of the areas largest manufacturers in Carroll and Scranton.
Scranton is home to New Way Trucks, one of the largest producers of garbage and refuse trucks. Check out this video to learn more about them. In addition to New Way trucks, students went to Van Wall equipment (John Deere), Rueter’s equipment and Pella. With such diversity of businesses even within the advanced manufacturing industry. I cannot wait to learn what the fall and spring trips will be next school year. |

March 5th trip to Iowa Central Community College
Traveling over to Iowa Central in early March, a group of 7 students went to explore programs that interested them. Ranging from nursing to fabrication to visual arts, students were split up by interest to see the exact departments of their choosing.
I went with the students to the Nursing school's SIM lab. This lab was equipped with human manikins that could cry, talk and even track your voice with their eyes. With eight different learning environments for students to practice with including a full scale ambulance simulator. No matter what your interest is, I would recommend looking into Iowa Central. They have a number of programs to offer. |
Math trip to space on February 5thWhen you think of math, do you also think about space and squares? Well if you went on the Math trip to the Sanford Museum and Planetarium in Cherokee you would. We spent the day learning about how math is used in archeology as well as in space.
We had the opportunity to parcel out a perfect meter square like they do at an archeological site and also see some of the largest stars in our galaxy. Did you know that the a star that appears blue is a young star and a star that is old appears red. Thus our sun, is a medium aged star because it appears yellow. |

Buena Vista University on January 23rdThinking about going to college in the area? If so, you would have learned a lot at our visit to Buena Vista University on Wednesday the 23rd of January. First we met with a group of college students in Dr. Gwen Hart's English class to talk about their work on a magazine that highlights high school writers.
Next we learned about their college experience; from study abroad to work study, roommates and everything in between. We got lunch, talked with admissions and got the official college tour. Surprisingly a fair portion is underground, so even if you have been to a football game there or even a volleyball match, you have not seen half of the school. Our next college trip will be to Iowa Central on March 5th. |
Communications Day in Denison on December 13th
Driving into Denison, we were not prepared to see the unique design of BlueSpace. From the Corvette to the giant dong to the mini movie theater we were impressed by the design and urban feel of the branding and marketing firm. They don't need commercials to sell there work, take one step inside this building and it will speak for itself.
Next heading to KDSN, we were able to learn about broadcasting and how marketing is used everyday on the radio. Going inside the booth and seeing the equipment for both FM and AM radio. With the small group, we got behind the scenes access. |
Watch this tour of BlueSpace to get an idea about what we saw. Make sure to sign up next year when we visit, this is a trip your do not want to miss.

Fall manufacturing day on December 5th to Breda and Arthur
We had the opportunity to view four different locations. Flint Hills in Arthur as well as Toyne, Trophies Plus and MoveIt in Breda.
Students spent the day learning about jobs in different work environments as well as getting some pretty in depth tours. We got to learn about the process to make DDGS (Dried Distillers Grains) from inside the manufacturing plant, saw a million dollar laser cutter and had the opportunity to see how the patches on letterman jackets are made and so much more. This trip was definitely worth the drive. |
